What does the word Filmmaking sounds like? Is it the making of a film? The creation of a movie? The edition of different moving images? Putting together still images in motion?
All of the questions mentioned above are accurate when it comes to describing the word, Filmmaking. Butt there is way more to it than just the simple creation of moving images placed in a software that creates a film. According to different references found online and in the dictionary regarding the definition of the word Filmmaking. Thus can be described as the process of making a film.
Filmmaking involves an initial idea and a story. This story is than created or given life through scriptwriting, casting, shooting, sound recording and reproduction, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a film release and exhibition.
When people think of the word Film, they often have the idea of a movie embedded in their heads. Filmmaking is also known to and refer to as Film Production. It is perfectly normal to have this image in you head, since it relates and reaches your brain as the word itself is described. The reality is that the word Filmmaking involves more than just a movie. It involves a process in the creation of a Film. The creation process has five different stages. The first stage is the Development stage, in which the ideas for the film are created. In a simple piece of paper artists, editors, scriptwriters, producers and directors gather together in oder to brainstorm and come up with different ideas for the film in question.
The second stage is called the Pre-production, which is the preparation of the shoot. It is normally during this stage that cast and film crew are hired, locations are selected, and sets are built. The third stage is the Production stage and has all the elements for the film recorded during the film shoot. The fourth stage is the Post-production stage and it involves all the images, sound, and visual effects of the recorded film. It is here when all these elements are edited. The final stage is the Distribution stage and as the word describes it, is when the finished film gets distributed and screened in cinemas and released to home video.
The word Filmmaking came into context back in the 1890’s. This is when the motion picture cameras were invented and because of the limits of technology, films of the 1890’s wereunder a minute long and until 1927motion pictures were produced without sound. But when did exactly and who created the word, Filmmaking?
Certainly, without a doubt the term became extremely well known and heavily popular back in the 1900’s. This is when the filmmakers began to introduce basic editing techniques and film narrative to motion pictures and this is when the term filmmaker was introduced to the world. A filmmaker is the individual conducting the final work and has a strong relationship with the film that is been created.
By now the term Filmmaking should have a more clear understanding and concrete knowledge from it origins to the development process and finalized stage.
