Who does not love the Pet Shop Boys? I mean, come one… They rock!
“Sometimes you’re better off dead
There’s gun in your hand and it’s pointing at your head
You think you’re mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town
Call the police, there’s a madman around
Running down underground to a dive bar
In a West End town”
West End Girls – The Pet Shop Boys
How can we forget those lyrics? Just impossible.
That Electronic Pop duo, consisting of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe were and created such a great impact in pop music back in the 1980’s when they first emerged. The combination of Pop and Dance made them so popular all over the planet, DJ’S in clubs and Radio Stations just couldn’t stop playing their music.
They are considered and rank the number 4 spot of the most successful dance artists in the history of dance music, and that is only after Madonna, Janet Jackson and Donna Summer.
The Pet Shop Boys have sold more than 50 million records worldwide and are listed as the most successful duo in UK music history by The Guinness Book of Records. Three-time Brit Award winners and six-time Grammy nominees, since 1985 they have achieved 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart, including four UK number ones: “West End Girls” (also number one on the US Billboard Hot 100), “It’s a Sin”, “Always on My Mind” and “Heart”. Other hit songs include a remake of The Village People’s “Go West”, “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)”, “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” and my personal favorites “Domino Dancing” and “New York City Boy.”
Domino Dancing – Pet Shop Boys
(Which by the way, it caused lots of controversy when the video was aired on TV for the first time, people thought it was a very homo-erotic video…Well, the Pet Shop Boys are GAY, after all.)
On September 28th 2011, the Pet Shop Boys announced that they had written 16 songs for their next studio album and expected to start recording the new songs in November 2011 for release in Autumn 2012. In the meantime, “Format” an album of the duo’s B-sides from 1996 to 2009 was released on 6 February 2012 as a sequel to their earlier B-side collection “Alternative.”
The twelfth album, entitled “Electric” was released on July 12th 2013.
